Who we are

The birth of “Saamari’s Birthday Cake!”

I began my baking journey when I met my husband 8 years ago. I never baked before that point and I started because I wanted to learn how to make his favorite cake, which was just a classic southern caramel cake. The very first time I made it, it was a total disaster. I used two boxed cakes —one per cake pan— because I didn’t know you were supposed to divide the batter between two pans. They were overbaked, dry, and the caramel sauce wasn’t caramel at all just a heated sugar glaze because I didn’t know how long to reduce/caramelize the sugar for. The taste and texture were everything short of edible. Feeling defeated, over the next few years I started to research baking in all aspects; recipes, techniques, the chemistry behind it all.

Eventually I masted the caramel cake from scratch! Becoming confident in my baking I decided to start making my kids birthday cakes from scratch, because I’m not the biggest fan of store-bought birthday cakes. They never get fully eaten, they’re super sugary, taste processed, lack depth of flavor and are just kind of a waste of money in my opinion. So, for my daughter’s 7th birthday I decided to make her the tastiest most whimsical cake that I could think of! One that kids would get excited about and adults would truly enjoy and appreciate. A cake that everyone would love to eat, not just because it was someone’s birthday but because it truly was just that good!

This was the birth of “Saamari’s Birthday Cake” it was also the start of my cake making journey. I wanted everyone to enjoy my cakes, not just my family. Seeing everyone smile and devour her birthday cake and ask for second servings and to take leftovers home that day sparked something in me. It made me happy, I had an “Aha! Moment” I had finally found something that I loved to do, that makes others smile… Bake Cakes! So, it’s only right to dedicate this cake to her, she’s the one that came up with the concept, the flavors, colors all of it!
